Phil Suess Re-Elected to Wheaton City Council

Wheaton City Council candidate Phil Suess won the 2013 election to the North District seat Tuesday with 884 votes and all precincts reporting. 

Suess, who has been on the Council for the past eight years finished ahead of JT del Alcazar with 587 votes, Ted Rodgers with 434 votes and Alberta Adamson with 325 votes.

Suess said Wednesday the results of the election were "very gratifying."

"It's always great when the community acknowledges you've done a good job," he said.

He said in his Patch candidate bio he ran for re-election because he wants to see Wheaton, "continue to evolve as a desirable and affordable residential community in which to raise a family."

"I think we want to maintain Wheaton as a desireable community in which you can raise a family... We've benefitted from others being in this position to create the environment we have and we want to maintain it and enhance it and pass it on," he said. 

He said he plans to continue to focus on keeping the city's finances in order, creating an environment that attracts private development and infrastructure, with respect to issues including flooding, water mains and sidewalks.

Suess, 55, is an investment consultant with a BA in economics from Northwestern University and an MBA from Loyola University of Chicago. He lives in Wheaton with his wife, Mary Suess and three children, Kathryn 19, Philip 16 and Laura 15.

"We're very fortunate to live in a community like Wheaton and we just want to make sure we continue to do the right things in the right way," he said.

Rodgers wrote in an email Wednesday that going forward, he'll continue to look for ways to strengthen and improve North Wheaton and the city as a whole.

He said he thinks leaders in the City of Wheaton who take initiative to engage with residents and business owners will be beneficial. He said he hopes leaders push the downtown strategic planning consultants to be more creative and bold to include support of the Wheaton Grand Theater, downtown hotel options, other destination venues and solving parking problems.

"Lastly, for Phil (Suess) specifically, I hope he will get to know and take to heart the concerns of the business owners and operators on North Main Street and attempt to create events and foster development of this important area of Wheaton," he said.
