Milliner Named to Senate Curatorial Advisory Board

Wheaton College Assistant Professor of Art History Dr. Matthew Milliner was recently appointed to the Senate Curatorial Advisory Board for the 113th Congress.

The board advises the U.S. Senate Commission on Art on the acquisition, care, and disposition of the Senate’s archives and architecture. Milliner was appointed to the board by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Milliner, a 1998 graduate of Wheaton College, teaches courses on the history of art and architecture. His scholarly specialization is in Byzantine and medieval art, with a focus on how such images inform contemporary visual culture. He has also written widely on contemporary art.

“I have an abiding interest in American architecture and art history, so this is a thrilling chance to take part in the stewardship of American art, and to meet people who are also experts in this area,” Milliner says.

Milliner, who completed an M.Div. at Princeton Theological Seminary, then an Art History M.A. and Ph.D. at Princeton University, says his research on the architecture of that campus allowed him to develop an understanding of the architecture of the U.S. Capitol.

“I got to know the early history of American architecture intimately during the nine years I was in Princeton—Its campus is a veritable textbook of American architecture,” he says. “All of which, of course, is reflected in the Capitol as well.”

Milliner’s term continues through January 2015.
