No Direct Elections, No Gambling: 2012 Illinois Republican Convention

Despite impassioned speeches about opening up the Illinois GOP, the Platform and Resolutions Committee voted against sending the return of direct elections for state committeemen to the floor. Read our live blog transcript for more details.

Update, 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012

Illinois Republicans hoping to have more of a say in the state party's processes will have to wait another four years for another swing at it.

While McLean County Republicans Chairman John Parrott rallied the packed room at the Platform and Resolutions Committee meeting Friday, during the Illinois State GOP Convention in Tinley Park, the votes fell short for direct elections of state committeemen and won't go to the full delegate floor Saturday.

Those in favor of the election said it would energize the state's Republicans, bring them back into the process and eventually turn Illinois back to red. And those against said the money needed to campaign would only corrupt another process further, and other obstacles would be counter productive.

The committee also decided to leave language against opening Illinois' doors to gambling.

Term limits would go a long way to help our state recover.

Dianna, Normally I'm not a big fan of term limits. BUT, Illinois could be the poster child for how entrenched elected politics can go wrong. I'm willing to jump on the term limits band wagon as a part of the solution.

R.W.Voter - Mark Kirk won because he was not too conservative - the republican party has forgotten that not all of us are ultra-conservative like the party is leaning. Why do you think Bill Brady lost??? All you too right wingers forget what Buckley said about nominating the most conservative person who can WIN....not the most conservative.

The Republican party only wants you if your far right.George Ryan got this state moving. We must learn compromise in not a bad word.If you can't make a deal to benefit the people stay at home.Votes for bills you know won't pass is not progress.
