Hastert Talks History

Dennis Hastert, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, will be the guest speaker at the opening of the Civil War exhibit "War of the Rebellion: On & Off the Battlefield." Hastert’s political career began in 1980 when he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and
ended with his resignation from Congress in 2007. He served in the House from 1987-2007, as Speaker from 1999-2007. He is also included in the Center’s Wheaton National Hall of Fame along with 60 other individuals who lived in Wheaton and are recognized for national achievement. Hastert will be introduced at 2:30 p.m. After the formal ceremony, tours of the 2,000 sq. ft. exhibit will be presented. The galleries are filled with memorabilia which come to life as the interpreters share tales of individuals, battle tactics, the homefront, and Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Encampments. Refreshments will be served and donations replace the admission fee. Reservations are appreciated.
