Winter weather made its first appearance in Wheaton on Monday, and city officials say the time is right to consider winter safety.
In a release posted Monday on the city’s website, the city announced it has a video out explaining why the National Weather Service refers to winter storms as “deceptive killers,” and advising four steps you can take now to be prepared for winter. The city’s video, “Winter Safety,” made with the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
The steps are:

Get a kit: Make an emergency supply kit at home for each member of your household — that includes pets. Making an emergency kit for each vehicle also is a smart move.
Make a plan: Have a plan in place for any type of emergency, and make sure each member of the family is aware and understands the plan. That includes a communication plan for how to get in contact with other family members.

Stay informed: Get a NOAA Weather Radio and check the forecast each day so you know what to expect and make changes of plans if necessary.
Be involved: Help your neighbors, volunteer with organizations like the Red Cross, which assists those hit by disaster.
The video includes more tips on how to make emergency kits, and helpful suggestions, such as keeping a paper list of important contacts handy if you can’t access contacts through your cellphone.
The city has posted the video on the Wheaton website, as well as on the city’s Channel 10 (CWC10).
