Chase Street Railroad Crossing Expected to Close

The move is expected to improve pedestrian safety at the crossing but could cause some woes for motorists who will have to find a new route, according to media reports.

The Union Pacific crossing at Chase Street near downtown Wheaton is expected to close in coming months after construction on a pedestrian is complete, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Wheaton City Council on Monday approved the closure, which is part of a Union Pacific plan to improve routes and allow for freight trains to switch tracks at the location and move faster through the area, according to Suburban Life Media.

The underpass is meant to improve safety at the crossing and provide a more convenient route for those headed to and from the Wheaton College campus or for those using the Prairie Path, according to Suburban Life Media.

The improvements are part of a $100 million Union Pacific plan to upgrade its lines and the new underpass could be finished by the end of this year, according to the Chicago Tribune.
