Wheaton Driver Charged with DUI in Pedestrian Death

Elderly Wheaton woman was struck and killed while crossing a street, according to authorities.

A Wheaton man was driving under the influence of cannabis when he struck and killed an 82-year-old resident as she crossed the street at Narragansett Avenue and 63rd Street on Thursday, the Chicago Tribune reports.


James W. Rudzinski, 61, of Wheaton, was being held in the DuPage County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail on  Saturday, according to the Tribune. He is charged with three counts — including one felony — of driving under the influence, and one count of failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Rudzinski was southbound on Narragansett and was trying to turn onto 63rd when his vehicle struck Bronislawa Zajac, 82, of the 6100 block of West 84th Place, the Tribune reports. Zajac was pronounced dead later at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
