Sheriff to Residents: 'Give Kids a Brake'

DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba reminds drivers to regulate themselves as kids get out of school and start to play in the streets.

Signs popping up around the county reminding motorists to “Protect our childrenSLOW DOWN,” are a reminder that school is almost over. DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba wants to remind drivers to slow down and be vigilant for children playing around cars and in—or near—the streets.

Sheriff Zaruba’s “Slow Down” traffic campaign aims to remind drivers that children are going to be out playing and drivers need to take responsibility for the safety of children playing. When drivers are reminded with "speed trailers" and "visual signage," they will regulate themselves and become aware of their driving, according to a press release from Sheriff Zaruba.

“The Slow Down campaign is an effective way to get this message across to both drivers and parents, with a goal of also teaching the children how to stay safe around roads,” Zaruba said in a press release Wednesday.

“This program is necessary to ensure children can play or ride a bike in their neighborhoods without their lives being endangered. I urge drivers to slow down and be vigilant around schools, parks and homes," he continued. “Give our children a 'brake.'”
