The is investigating a shooting that occurred Saturday at 1N224 Papworth St. in unincorporated Wheaton. An alleged intruder was shot by the homeowner, an off-duty police officer, according to a press release issued Monday by the sheriff's office. The release did not contain the address of the house, but Patch has confirmed it.
Both men were transported to Central DuPage Hospital. The man who was shot is still at the hospital, and is in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Friday.
The sheriff's office said the homeowner called 911 around 7 a.m. Saturday to report an intruder.
When sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene, they said the homeowner and intruder were fighting. During the altercation the intruder was shot by the homeowner, a police officer who was off duty at the time, according to the release.
Numerous neighbors on the block told Patch about police activity early Saturday morning:
- Neighbors told Patch the homeowner is a Wood Dale police officer. The Wood Dale Police Department declined to comment Tuesday whether the incident involved one of the department's officers.
- A neighbor on Papworth told Patch that at least 20 DuPage County Sheriff squad cars were surrounding the home until early afternoon.
- Another neighbor told Patch that officers knocked on his door around 10 a.m. and questioned him about the early morning incident. According to that neighbor, officers asked if he was aware of any parties in the area. The individual told officers he was not.
- These neighbors say DuPage Sheriff officers told them an intruder entered a home on Saturday, when an altercation ensued.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident. No arrests have been made and no further information is being released at this time, according to DuPage County Sheriff's Spokeswoman Dawn Domrose.

No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation, said a spokesman for the DuPage County State's Attorney office Thursday.
