Oakbrook Center Mall Robbery Suspect Held on $500K Bail
The 25-year-old Detroit man is charged with one count of attempted armed robbery for the sledgehammer incident at Oakbrook Center's C. D. Peacock.
The Detroit man accused of trying to rob a jewelry store at Oakbrook Center with a sledgehammer in broad daylight is being held on $500,000 bail after appearing in DuPage County court Friday.
Levert Jones, 25, is facing one count of felony attempted armed robbery, according to county court records. If he makes bail, he will have to wear a GPS monitoring device, according to the Daily Herald.
The DuPage County State's Attorney's Office says that on June 23 at around 3:45 p.m. Jones and two accomplices entered the mall's C. D. Peacock store, where Jones pulled out a sledgehammer and began smashing a glass jewelry case.
An in-store security guard attempted to apprehend Jones and when he resisted arrest, the guard shot him in the abdomen, the Daily Herald reports.
Two other suspects remain at large after escaping in a stolen vehicle. The men are described as black males around 30 years old, one 5'9" and about 230 pounds with a black T-shirt and a tattoo on the right side of his neck, and the other, 5'11" and 160 pounds with a large beard and a white T-shirt.
WGNTV reports that Jones is suspected to be part of a ring of smash-and-grab robbers responsible for crimes as far away as North Carolina and Missouri.
The next court date for Jones' case is July 11.
