Man Who Escaped Prison Sentenced in Suburban Bank Robberies

A 43-year-old man most widely known for his 2009 escape from prison, and the two-day crime-spree that followed, was sentenced Monday to 30 years in prison for  six bank robberies and one attempted robbery in suburban communities, according to area media reports.

Robert Maday, who is already serving a combined 43 year sentence for past crimes, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison and has yet to be sentenced for the 2009 escape and a bank robbery who is accused of committing during the escape, according to the Daily Herald.

The six bank robberies and one attempted robbery occurred in Huntley, Lake Zurich, Buffalo Grove, Arlington Heights and Bloomingdale in late 2008, according to the article.

The Chicago Tribune reports in 2009, Maday was being transported to a court in Rolling Meadows when he was able to free himself from his restraints, steal a gun from an investigator and then escape. He was on the lam for 27 hours and stole cars from two women and then robbed a Bloomingdale bank, getting away with $32,000, according to the article.

Prior to his escape, Maday had entered guilty pleas to the bank robberies and agreed to a deal that "would have limited his sentence to about 10 years," according to the Chicago Sun Times. Maday's attorney argued his client had a troubled upbringing and had mental health problems, according to the article.
