Loaded Gun Found Outside Madison Elementary

A resident found a loaded gun on the property of Madison Elementary School this morning.

A citizen found a loaded firearm at approximately 8:30 a.m. today, Wednesday Dec. 15, on the property of , 1620 Mayo Avenue, according to a press release from the Wheaton Police Department. The weapon was found on the far south side of the school property approximately 75 yards from the school building. Officers responded immediately and made the weapon safe. The weapon was loaded and lying next to a dog leash along a dirt walking trail. The firearm is a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. The weapon was found before the school day started.

Officers and detectives of the Wheaton Police Department checked the interior and exterior of the school building and found no additional weapons. Students began arriving for the school day and officers remained on campus.

There was no additional threat to the safety and welfare of the school children.

Detectives continue to work to find the owner of the weapon.

There are no recent reports of crimes in the community that involved firearms.
