High School Student Brings Knife to Glenbard West

The student reportedly admitted to being a member of the Latin Kings.

A 17-year-old male student and Glendale Heights resident brought a folding knife to on Thursday, Nov. 10.

According to Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer, the male did not harm or threaten students in the building. Holmer said the knife was not "displayed in any way."

The teen admitted to being a member of the Latin Kings gang, and reportedly was in possession of the knife for protection, according to Holmer.

Patch contacted school district officials who said they would comment later this afternoon.

This is the third incident involving a weapon at a Glen Ellyn school this year.

The juvenile was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and was released to his parents, according to police reports.

Around 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, school officials released the following statement to Patch:

"We are prohibited from speaking about student discipline matters. What I can tell you is that the safety of our students, faculty and staff is our No. 1 priority. We have an ongoing dialogue with our students about making good decisions."

"We treat any situations that violate our Board of Education policy regarding student conduct very seriously. Possession, sale, use or transfer of any firearm, knife, or other object that may be reasonably considered to be a weapon is clearly outlined as prohibited student conduct in our policy. Any student who brings such materials to school is subject to strict disciplinary measures and is reported to police."

Thank God it isn't the norm here. I didn't really think it was, my husband and I have heard nothing but good things about this town and the schools. We are very thankful that we live here and that our son is at West. We are not naive we know that things happen in all schools, in all towns, in all states. I agree with you archon what this school did is admirable. :)

Policy!! I have to laugh! I've had kids through this high school and they are consistant and saying "nothings wrong" and it sails by. "We have an ongoing dialogue with our students about making good decisions." I suppose sending out one of your cute news letters is making all this right? These administators need to wake up! This is not little sunny Glen Ellyn school anymore..get with the times! There are drug sales..kids smoking pot on campus, bb guns, now knives and admitted gang members!!! HELLO?!!!!! Wake UP!!! This school is no different than any bad inner city school with problems..This sleepy little town and school has a real culture and I'm confident if you've lived here for more than 15 years..you can see it! I had a conversation with one of these administators 2 years ago about this issue ..response was: "What about our reputation?" My response: "You must be kidding and what about the kids safety?" Screw the lights at the field..get metal detectors and drug sniffing dogs and beef up the presents of cops..not rent a cops! Wake up Glen Ellyn!!!! Mayberry is gone!

Char, Don't be fooled by the comments about this school...Admirable? Why? because they reported a gang member had a knife in school? Archon are you a student at west or have students ? Then you have no clue what goes on behind the doors at the school. Okay look back within the last month or so..kids with bb guns, kids smoking pot outside on property and inside..check with your local police about kids with heroin and if I'm not mistaken there was a kid that just overdosed a few weeks ago from it! Did you read about it? Of course not..what about the reputation! We can get our town back if we build another school north of us! Latin Kings? One of the biggest pockets of them is right behind Brunswick bowl on North avenue! Oh and did I tell ya? They go to school with your kid!

@ John Gordon - The people who live behind the Brunswick Zone attend Glenbard East, not West. The kids who attend West are those who went or was supposed to go ( Private School) to Hadley. They also have a portion of kids who went to Glenside.
