Former Candidate, Business Owner Not Guilty of Domestic Battery Charges

Derek Bromstead not guilty in domestic battery case.

A former Wheaton City Council candidate and downtown business owner, Derek Bromstead, of the 0-100 block of Mitchell Circle in Wheaton, was found not guilty during a Monday bench trial for domestic battery charges in February.

Bromstead's case stemmed from an incident involving a young relative at his home. Bromstead, 43, was accused of using a belt to strike the relative Feb. 1.

Judge Elizabeth Sexton found that Bromstead's action toward his teenage daughter were not beyond the realm of parental discipline, according to prosecutors. Sexton heard evidence that included testimony from Bromstead's daughter and a police officer.
