Dist. 200 Addresses Teacher Sex Assault Charges in Statement, Letter to Parents

No additional former or current students are involved in the charges against Wheaton North teacher Ed Klemm, officials said.

Guidance counselors will continue to be on hand for students in Community Unit School District 200 following the arrest of a Wheaton North High School teacher facing sexual assault charges, officials said Wednesday.

The district first addressed the charges in a brief letter to parents sent late Wednesday morning via the district’s Blackboard online system. The letter said Klemm was arrested in connection with charges of “Criminal Assault by Person in Authority or Position of Trust.” The phrase “Sexual Assault” did not appear until a second statement was released in the afternoon.

, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. The charges are in connection to a series of sexual encounters prosecutors say Klemm had with a former Wheaton North student, who was 16 when the incidents began.

Klemm was arrested on Tuesday, but not on school district property, the district’s statements said. The district also confirmed that Klemm was not at Wheaton North on Wednesday. He remains in the DuPage County Jail on $60,000 bond.

“At this time, it is our understanding that no additional former or current students are involved,” the district’s second statement said. “Guidance counselors and staff have been and will continue to be available for any students who need assistance.”

A social worker will sit in Klemm’s classes for as long as necessary to support any student concerns.

Klemm was suspended from his teaching job without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He will not return to work until the issue is resolved by authorities and the district is informed of the outcome. Only then will the district review Klemm’s employment status.

“The District takes the safety and emotional well-being of our students very seriously,” the second statement said. “All staff must complete rigorous criminal background checks before beginning employment.

“We encourage parents to reach out to their school social workers, counselors and psychologists if they need assistance in talking to their children about these terrible, unfortunate allegations.”
