Cross Country, Track Trainer in Warrenville Charged With Sexually Abusing a Minor

Officials are asking the public to contact law enforcement with any information related to the arrest of Robert Theodore, 60, of Woodridge, who was actively training track and cross country athletes.

A Woodridge man who worked as a trainer at Life Time Fitness in Warrenville has been charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse after it was determined he had inappropriate contact with a boy he was training.

Robert Theodore, 60, of the 3800 block of Hagen Court, Woodridge, was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual abuse, Class 2 felonies, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin. If Theodore is found guilty he faces up to seven years in prison. In addition, officials are asking anyone who may have information related to Theodore to contact law enforcement.

Theodore had inappropriate sexual contact with the minor, then 16, on a number of occasions, according to a news release from Berlin’s office. The abuse allegedly took place at Theodore’s home, the boy’s home and at a local gym where he would train the boy.

Theodore worked at Life Time Fitness as a track/triathlon trainer.

“The allegations against Mr. Theodore are sickening,” Berlin said in a news release Wednesday. “The relationship between an athlete and their trainer is built on trust and a desire to bring out the best in the athlete. It is alleged that through his actions, Mr. Theodore cared nothing about his young victim and destroyed the trust his victim had placed in him to satisfy his own despicable desires.”

The arrest was the result of a seven-month investigation regarding reports that Theodore was having inappropriate contact with minors, according to a news release from the Naperville Police Department. In addition, it is further alleged that Theodore bought expensive gifts for the boy, such as specialized sports equipment, clothing and electronics.

Theodore was actively training area track and cross country athletes, according to the Naperville Police Department.

Theodore appeared in Bond Court Wednesday morning where Judge Elizabeth Sexton set bond at $250,000. He was able to post the required $25,000, according to Berlin’s office.

As a condition of Theodore’s bond, he was ordered to submit to GPS monitoring and have no contact with the victim or anyone under the age of 18.

His next court appearance is scheduled for October 15, 2012 in front of Judge Blanche Fawell for arraignment.

Anyone with further information regarding Theodore is asked to contact Investigator Richard Wistocki at the Naperville Police Department at 630-305-5384 or the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office at 630-407-8000.
