Coffee Break Ends in Bicycle Theft in Wheaton

Police took two bicycle theft reports earlier this month. Both bicycles were not locked, according to Wheaton police reports.

One man who stopped for a cup of coffee learned the hard way that even a moment of carelessness can cost you.

It was one of two thefts this week in which bicycles that had not been locked up were taken by apparently opportunistic thieves.

The first incident occurred Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, when a bicyclist left his bicycle outside Caribou Coffee, 390 W. Front St., about 3:41 p.m. while he went inside to have  cup of joe. The victim told police that as he drank his coffee inside, he saw a male get onto his unlocked bicycle and take off eastbound on West Front Street before turning south. The bicycle was valued at $650.
