The Wheaton Police Department will increase enforcement efforts of Illinois’ safety seat belt laws as part of the statewide “Click It or Ticket” mobilization from June 23, 2014 through July 6, 2014.
The City of Wheaton received a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety to fund this enforcement effort.
The goal of the effort is to boost the state’s safety belt use rate and reduce fatalities and serious injuries. Safety belt use is important for all motor vehicle occupants. Motor vehicle crashes in the U.S. are the leading cause of death for people ages 5 to 24.
Officers during this enforcement period will be operating several Occupant Protection Enforcement Zones. Uniformed police officers will be outside of their vehicles at several locations throughout the community as they look for unrestrained drivers and passengers. Violators will be directed to other police officers, who will issue citations for the violations.
The Wheaton Police Department wants all drivers to be aware of the additional risks of driving without a seatbelt, which can result in serious injury or death.
