Bromstead Makes Brief Court Appearance for Battery Charge

City Council candidate Derek Bromstead accused of striking relative with belt.

Wheaton City Council candidate Derek Bromstead appeared in court Monday for his first formal hearing, albeit a brief one, on a domestic battery charge.

Bromstead, 33, did not speak during the short hearing which centered on his next scheduled date that would allow his attorney time to look over evidence and reports provided by prosecutors. The judge set March 21 for his next appearance.

Free on $15,000 bail, Bromstead is accused of using a belt to strike a relative in the back and upper thigh during a Feb. 1 incident, according to court records.

He was initially ordered to stay away from the relative for 72 hours, and is now under a court order prohibiting any "harmful" contact, court documents show.

Bromstead is seeking an at-large seat on the council. He currently runs a restaurant in Wheaton and is president of the board of directors for the Downtown Wheaton Associations.
