What's Happening at Cantigny's Green Fair?

Here's a complete rundown of everything you can expect to see at this weekend's event.

Third-Annual Green Fair will have tons of things to do and see. Come out to learn, shop, eat, and recycle between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24. It’s all free with a $5 parking pass. If you stay all day, that’s $1 per hour for a whole carload of people to do a ton of interesting things. Did I say a ton? Yes, a TON.

The Recycling Extravaganza: 9:00 a.m. to noon in the parking lot.

What can you bring?

  • Electronics: Computers, monitors, scanners, printers, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, radios, cell phones, dial phones, answering machines, keyboards, kids electronic games, extension cords, ink jet cartridges, toasters, blenders, coffee makers, microwave ovens, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers
  • Scrap metal: Pots & pans, metal lawn furniture, swing sets, metal hangers, grills, tomato cages, chicken wire, metal tools, railings, propane tanks, washers, dryers, metal tools, water heaters, pipes, metal railings, gutters, garden tools, metal shelving, tomato cages, chicken wire, fencing, wheelbarrows, wagons
  • Batteries: Car, boat, truck, motor cycle, sump pump, computer back-ups, A—C—D, 9 volt, Ni Cad, Lithium, button, rechargeables
  • Pet supplies: leashes and collars not metal, stainless steel water and feed bowls, carriers, bird cages
  • Miscellaneous: Bikes in any condition, bike helmets, bike baskets, sewing machines, yarn, buttons, clothing, wheel chairs, tattered & torn American Flags for proper retirement, eye glasses, hearing aids, house & car keys, rulers, rubber stamps, record albums, license plates, wine corks, Brita filters. NOTE: NO dehumidifiers or air conditioners, please.

The Green Fair: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all over Cantigny’s grounds

Business: There will be dozens of green companies, services, and products to learn about. Alternative fuel vehicle technology displays will feature a solar powered electric vehicle charging station. More than 100 green vendors will have booths offering unique shopping ideas, including Cantigny’s rain barrels. SCARCE will have booths that exhibit and demonstrate an energy bike, worm composting, a water shed model, groundwater flow models. One vendor will provide microscopes where participants can see the critters that live in our water. Energy conservation booths will provide information to help residents and businesses save energy and money.

Learning: The Illinois EPA Clean Air Super Hero, Breathe Easy Man  will speak about air quality. The DuPage County Health Department will have information on their well water testing program, and on their medicine disposal program. The ACE (Alliance for Climate Education) will offer a performance about climate change at 1:30 p.m. Green Fire, the full-length, high-definition film about conservationist Aldo Leopold’s life, will be shown at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

Food: A Farmers Market will have local and organic foods for purchase. Whole Foods will be giving cooking demonstrations for the “hungry to learn”. Food will be available at outdoor concession booths, in addition to a wine and beer garden, and indoors at Cantigny’s coffee shop. Lunch will be served in their restaurant from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cantigny’s beekeeping display and food scrap composting program will also be on display.

Art & Design: Recycled Art! an exhibit by high school and college students, will be on display all day. In the Green, a band featuring singer/environmentalist Jack Kaufmann, will perform a musical event at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. The FashionECOnista Show will feature eco minded fashions, stepping on the runway at 11:00 a.m. More than  30 outfits will be shown including indie and cottage industry fashion designers--everything from organic cotton to vests made of recycled juice boxes.

Fun for Families: Super Stolie and the Rock Stars will provide a kids concert from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. DuPage Children's Museum will have activities in their childrens’ tent. There will also be crafts projects, and an appearance by Frog Lady. The North Suburban Wood Carvers will be whittling and carving.
