What Should Replace the Old JB Winterberry Space?

In a new weekly series, Patch asks readers how they would fill empty storefronts around Wheaton.

After nearly a decade in downtown Wheaton, antique shop at 124 N. Main St. in October 2010.

The space is now available for rent, or for sale, with three first floor units totaling more than 3,200 square feet. The lower level, 1,800 square feet, is also available for $1,100 per month, according to the Downtown Wheaton Association.

  • Unit A is 1,200 square feet and $2,000 per month
  • Unit B is 550 square feet and $650 per month
  • Unit C is 1,500 square feet and $1,800 per month

After almost two years, the large space is still vacant, with no word of what might open there.

In our new weekly series, "Visions for Vacancies," we're asking Wheaton residents what businesses they would like to see fill the vacant storefronts around town.

Whether it's another resale shop, hair salon or something completely new, we want to hear what businesses you'd most like to see take over the old JB Winterberry space.

I would love to see an independent bookstore or used bookstore in town. That one by the tracks by Wheaton College is the only one I know of other than Just The Bookstore in Glen Ellyn.

A small bookstore was my first thought too.

I love that idea! I have walked into Anderson's in Downers Grove a couple times and LOVE it there.

Either that or an Apple store.

NO MORE SALONS!!! We need a local grocery store & pharmacy we can walk to. They are as necessary as a bank, a post office and a gas station for folks who live in town & want to simply walk to town without the need for a car.

A restaurant. Maybe a Chipotle.

I'll add in that besides used books, I'd love a place that also bought and sold used CDs and LPs. Kind of smaller version of Half Price Books I guess.

A bookstore would be perfect!

Enough of the salons!!!! MAKE SOMETHING UNIQUE TO DOWNTOWN,,,like a cupcake place or a soul food restarant!

Cupcake places are all the rage these days. This property has separate spaces, too—an upscale cupcake place could be a good one for the smaller space.

Good luck on the book store. It would never survive. Consumers in Wheaton couldn't support a Barnes & Noble (the company was founded in Wheaton). Ditto on an LP & CD place. One of these types of stores used to be in place in Danada. It closed a long time ago.

Not another spa or re-sale shop. I would love to see a great new bookstore.

NO MORE YARN STORES or OUTDATED MENSWEAR STORES. Downtown Wheaton needs such a shot in the arm. A bookstore, a restaurant (that is good please) WM. Sonoma, Crate and Barrel.

Sur la table! Or some other kitchen type store. J Jill, Ann Taylor Loft, Eddie Bauer

I like that idea!!

I agree! I thought of a book store right away. A book store with great atmosphere...new and used books.

how about a combo...they have a downstairs and an upstairs right? could be bookstore up and donut, bakery, gathering place down...with a fountian...good atmosphere. People could grab a book and go downstairs to enjoy.
