– Wheaton-Warrenville South High School football Coach Ron Muhitch was selected by USA Today High School sports as one of the top high school football coaches in the country. Coach Muhitch was chosen by the USA TODAY staffers after a month of research and conversations with football experts. He was one of eight coaches selected in the state of Illinois.
A process of public voting has begun in which Coach Muhitch can be chosen as the top high school football coach in the state. The first round of voting will conclude at noon on October 8. This vote will be followed by a vote in 8 regions and then on to nationals. The national champion will receive $2,000 for their athletic department and all 8 finalists will receive a banner for their school.
Coach Muhitch has been at Wheaton Warrenville South for 33 years and in 2011 received the Illionois Coach of the Year Award by the National Federation of State High Schools Association. Athletic Director Mike Healy adds that “Coach Muhitch epitomizes what it means to be a coach. He is passionate about helping our student-athletes succeed both on and off the field. Wheaton-Warrenville South is a better place because we have had Coach Muhitch with us for the last four decades.” He has won three 7A state titles and has two runner-up finishes since 2006. In addition to being a winning football coach, Coach Muhitch takes the time to really get to know the kids as people as well as players. He goes above and beyond by spending hours interviewing seniors in the off-season and makes it his mission to prepare each for life beyond high school football. Senior and player Mocha Uchiyama states, “By having a personal bond with every one of his players he is able to have all the players respond in a positive way on and off the field. There is no better motivator than Coach Muhitch. With so much experience under his belt, he is able to prepare us for every possible situation and always puts us in the right position to make plays.”
