Moms Talk: Are Weapons In School a Problem?

Do you think the schools are doing enough to prevent weapons from entering campuses?

There have been three separate incidents involving weapons on school campuses in Glen Ellyn, this year.

Glen Ellyn Deputy Police Chief Bill Holmer says they're always interested in finding more ways to prevent weapons from making it onto school property, but do more steps need to be taken? Do you think there is a weapons problem at schools here in Glen Ellyn, and or Wheaton? Are you concerned about your child's safety at school?

No that it's really any different, but my girls attend school in Lombard. I don't necessarily know that there are any real physical efforts to keep weapons out of their school, but I know that getting into that place when you're not a student is like trying to break into Fort Knox. Honestly, how much can a school really do anyway? I can tell you, even with metal detectors and all of that, if someone wants to bring a weapon in, they'll find a way to do it. It's not to say that I don't value our children's safety, by any means....but we've become a paranoid society. I don't want my kids growing up with the sense of impending danger around every corner. Do I want them to be aware? Sure. Do I want them to be safe? Absolutely. But if some kid flips a lid one day and decides to go nuts at the school, I'm not going to hold the school responsible if there was no way for them to know. If there were signs, perhaps. It all depends on the situation. My point, however, is that I want my kids to be able to enjoy life and the freedom that is our country. I don't want them staring warily at everyone who comes near them and jumping at the mere sight of a stranger on the street.

With the public pressure to cut costs and hold down taxes, should schools transfer resources (money and manpower) to an increased effort to make them safer?
