Human Trafficking On The Rise!

I was surprised recently to learn of the ongoing human trafficking problem here in the western suburbs.  For some reason, I always envisioned this problem to be found in major cities, such as Chicago and other large cities across the country.  However, the crime of human trafficking, whether it be for labor or sex, is on the increase in the suburbs.  The women and children who are primarily the victims are in need of protection from this modern day slavery.

I applaud the work of my own Congressman, Peter Roskam - who is a member of the House GOP Human Trafficking Task Force - for his leadership in trying to combat this growing problem.  Not only has he sponsored legislation to help solve the problem but he has put effort into educating fellow legislators and local community members.

Recently, Roskam hosted a forum of suburban community leaders and law enforcement to educate and suggest tools for officials to address their human trafficking problems.  Awareness that this problem exists is vital to eradicating this heinous crime.  I encourage Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike to work together in addressing solutions to this growing problem.
