Wilfried Schmerold, 91, Dec. 30, 1919 - Apr. 15, 2011

A founder of CDH, Schmerold died Friday, Apr. 15 in Naperville.

Wilfried L. Schmerold, M.D. of Wheaton died Friday, Apr. 15 at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville. He was 91. He was born December 30, 1919 in Germany.

He was a graduate of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Munchen, Fachbereich Medizin, Munchen, Germany. He practiced dermatology in the Wheaton area for 50 years, and was a co-founder of Central DuPage Hospital (CDH). He continued his work and research until age 89.

He loved his work and he had a passion for travel, stopping on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

He is survived by his children, Klaus (Gabi), John (Amy), Wilfred (Suzanne), James (Lisa), Sue (Ed) Zielke, Paul (Amy), Carl (Shelly), Mike (Erin), and Tom; 19 grandchildren, Diana, Sebastian, Kerstin, Katrina, Elizabeth, Jack, Luke, Brian, Tyler, Emily, Aaron, Alex, Andy, Melissa, Alicia, Peter, Jacob, Emma, and Ryan; and one great-granddaughter, Kylie. 

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet and Mary Ann, his former wife, Perlette, his parents, Wilhelm and Frieda and his sister Marianne.

A visitation was held Tuesday, Apr. 19 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, and a Mass was held Wednesday, Apr. 20 at St. Michael Church.
