Visitation Tuesday for William G. Mitchell, 81, of Wheaton

A visitation for William Mitchell will be held on Tuesday, November 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 21, at 10:00 A.M.

William G. Mitchell, age 81, a resident of Wheaton, IL for over 50 years, died peacefully on Friday, November 16, 2012, at home. He was born February 8, 1931 in Chicago to William and Ruth Mitchell.

Bill grew up on the south side of Chicago. He attended Illinois Weslyan University and then graduated from the University of Oklahoma on a swimming scholarship. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. After his service he went to the Northwestern University School of Law. In September of 1957 he married Mary Jo McAvoy.

He started in the law department of Beatrice Foods, where he eventually became the Chairman of the Board. He went on to become the president of Centel Corp. In addition he served on many boards including: Sherwin Williams, American Medical Assoication, Peoples Energy, and Northern Trust Bank.

He loved to golf and was an active member of Chicago Golf and Coral Ridge Golf Club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He was a very charitable and outgoing person and had many good friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, two sons, William H. (Susann) Mitchell of Ft. Lauderdale and John Gilbert Mitchell of Wheaton, grandsons, Michael Edward Mitchell and Joseph Troiano, one brother, Gilbert (Shirley) Mitchell of Hinsdale and nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 21, at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
