According to the Illinois Track and Cross Country Association, of which Dekan is a Hall of Fame member, the Wheaton High School graduate founded Dekan Athletic and was the head track and field coach at Glenbard High School.
While a coach, Dekan invented an alternative to the standard stopwatch, according to the Tribune: "The 1/100 second Athletic Performance Analyzer, which he designed for use at track meets. It was eventually bought and used by some NFL teams, including the Cowboys and Bengals, family members said."
