Green Mom on Our Children and Their Health

Green mom gains some insight about children and what they know about health from local chiropractor. Let's help our children learn about the right choices to make when choosing what to eat.

On a recent visit to my local chiropractor, we got into a conversation about an experience she had had at her children's elementary school this spring.

Dr Olga is a wonderful chiropractor from Wheaton with a passion for helping others be aligned but also educating on how to live the most healthy life you can, playing close attention to diet. She is also a Shaklee distributor so we share that passion for living in harmony with nature.

She was asked to teach a pizza making class for a fun school day. As she prepared for it, she added a bit of discussion on what foods make us stronger, smarter and healthier. The folks at the school said she would have time to fill in as the pizza wouldn't take the whole time.

She made up  these cool posters for the kids... one containing foods that are good for our muscles, brains and bones... the other containing foods that are popular and eaten often, that most kids could identify but  when eaten regularly, do not promote a healthy lifestyle. I've included them here. She taught 6 classes.

What she discovered about the kids and what they knew about different foods was fascinating.

100% of the kids could identify apples, carrots, celery and banana.

Only 50 % could identify cherries and broccoli.

When asked, more than half of the kids knew someone who had cancer.....more than who knew what broccoli was.

Look at the healthy poster though—there are so many more fruits and veggies—she found many kids didn't have any idea what those others were.

If we have a hard time identifying certain foods, chances are they haven't visited our dinner plates that often.

It has been said recently that we are the most over fed  but undernourished nation. Our food supply is  plentiful but lacking in nutrients. Our soils have been stripped and processed and thus produce foods that contain much less nutritionally than of years past. Eating organic can be costly and unaffordable for some but is becoming increasingly necessary if we are to get the nourishment from our foods that our bodies require.

These are our children, the future of our nation. I applaud Dr. Olga for trying to address the importance of choosing good fruits and veggies that will help their bodies be strong, full of energy and smarts. I love the visuals she used to get down to their level in hopes they will learn and absorb.

As her classes ended she challenged the kids to go grocery shopping with their parents...gave them a grocery list as a reference of good foods for healthy bones, muscles and nerves. She suggested they try to find one or two food they don't eat or know and try them...share them with their family.

She challenged them to think about this: if we do not change....history will repeat itself. I challenge you to think about that as well! Choice wisely, take your vitamins to fill in the gaps where your diet falls short. I recommend Shaklee vitamins as they are pharmeceutical grade, whole food supplments.  Challenge yourself to try new things, healthy foods that make us feel better, full of energy and life...enjoying life and feeling better everyday.
