Good Ole Summertime

Green Mom finds solutions for Healthy summer eating.

Good ole summertime. Popsicles, ice cream, lemonade, the sounds of the ice cream man….not a whole lot of healthy nutrition. But sure conjures up memories of my childhood. Take a look at one Ice Cream Man of today.

One of my sons told me a couple weeks ago that he wished he could have some ‘stuff’ that his friends had for their lunch. When I asked him what that meant he told me his friends had fruit snacks, ring pops, fruit roll ups. All sugar, I said. Did you know that the average American consumes 2-3 pounds of sugar per week? Sugar does such damage.

I went on to tell my son that we used to have those things around the house when his oldest brother Paul was his age. But his brother also suffered from allergies and asthma then.  As we discovered that he was highly sensitive to sugar and his immune system was crashed, I made the decision to change his diet as well as add supplementation    along with regular chiropractic adjustments.

Those changes plus using green cleaners instead of conventional ‘toxic’ cleaners, changed his health … saved his life I think. My younger son was surprised that his brother had had asthma because he doesn’t have it today, 11years later. We made those changes I said, to my younger son and we will continue to keep those things out of our house. Doesn’t mean his friends are wrong, I said, we just choose healthier choices, healthier foods each day, a balanced diet of healthy nutrition.

If you are ready for some changes, take a look at the new USDA MY Plate guidelines. I like it as it is put in simple terms. I.e. make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Balance your calories, reduce soda consumption and replace with water. The website is full of information, tips and plans to follow.

So back to summer and trying to make good choices. How about freezing Shaklee Lemon Lime Performance into homemade popsicles.

How about freezing your grapes blueberries then pulling them out on a hot day for a refreshing snack? When your bananas turn brown, cut them up and throw them in the freezer. They will be there when you are ready to make fruit smoothie or protein shake. Strawberries, bananas, peaches, mangos, mixed berries all make great smoothies. Add some protein powder for extra punch of healthiness. Shaklee has a few choices but choose the flavor you like and add a scope or two.

Frequent the local health food stores to find some healthy snack and breakfast alternatives and get to know the owners and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I like Nutrition Network on County Farm and Geneva Rds. Bonnie  the owner is a great resource and help.

Cut up fruits and veggies when you get home from the store and keep them in handy Snapware or Tupperware containers. When you open the fridge the healthy choices are right there. Move on toward healthy nutrition; make a few changes each day and each week. You won’t miss the bad stuff after a while, neither will your kids.We choose Shaklee because of the high quality and  scientifically tested products. Educate yourself on good choices. There are some great resources available. I encourage you to take some extra time to choose wisely.

To your good health,
