Increase in West Nile Virus Prompts Mosquito Control in Wheaton

Most recent positive tests for the virus in Wheaton were Aug. 31.

In response to the persistent West Nile virus activity in DuPage and the surrounding counties, the Wheaton Mosquito Abatement District has scheduled a mosquito spraying for Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The DuPage County Health Department today announced the number of human cases of West Nile Virus is now 17, including two that have . Those affected by WNV are in their 20s-70s, and are located in Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Hinsdale, Lisle, Lombard, Naperville, Villa Park and Westmont.

According to an interactive map of mosquito testing in Wheaton, the most recent positive tests were Aug. 31, at the trap near the intersection of Carlton Street and Liberty Drive in downtown Wheaton and the trap near Seven Gables Park.

Applications are typically made from dusk until 2 a.m. In case of rain or other unacceptable weather condition, the treatment will be rescheduled. The treatment will cover the entire district and is intended to reduce the numbers of mosquitoes that are known to transmit West Nile Virus to people, according to the City of Wheaton.

WNV is transmitted to people by infected mosquitoes, and can be prevented by:

  • Using insect repellents when you go outdoors.
  • Wearing long sleeves and pants from dusk to dawn.
  • Installing or repairing screens on windows and doors.  Using air conditioning, if you have it.
  • Emptying standing water from items outside your home such as flowerpots, buckets and kiddie pools.
