Free Mulch Available in City Commuter Lot

Wheaton Public Works crews ground storm debris into mulch, which is now available to residents.

Following the July 1 severe storm that led to a disaster declaration in Wheaton, crews collected damaged tree debris citywide. The city provided the one-time special collection because of the widespread damage to trees throughout the community, according to a message from the city.

To double grind the debris, the city contracted a tub grinder into usable landscape mulch, which is now available in the city's commuter lot at the intersection of Carlton Street and Liberty Drive in downtown Wheaton.

The City contracted a tub grinder to double grind the large amount of debris into usable landscape mulch, which is now available for free for anyone who wants to pick it up.

Crews will continue replenishing a supply of mulch while it lasts. A sign will direct you to the southwest corner of the lot, where you can pick up mulch at any time of day.

Using mulch in your yard can be an environmentally friendly way to help plants retain moisture. According to the EPA, mulch can help prevent weed growth, retain water, regulate soil temperature and add nutrients back to the soil.
