The Wheaton Municipal Band cools off with shades of blue on July 18

Beat the mid-July heat with an all blue concert by the Wheaton Municipal Band Thursday, July 18 at 8:00 p.m. in Memorial Park, 208 W. Union Ave., Wheaton, IL.  What better way to cool off from the mid-summer heat than relax to “Shades of Blue,” performed by the Wheaton Municipal Band.

On the Program is “Blue Tango,” by Leroy Anderson, “Blue Velvet,” Blue Bells of Scotland,” and the Sousa march, “Who’s Who in Navy Blue.”  Also featured is Frank Tichell’s popular “Blue Shades.”  This wonderful work for band weaves traditional blues ideas into a concert band work.  There are hints of blue notes, blues scales and blues form, but the work cannot be classified as a traditional jazz work.  It is considered a standard in concert band repertoire.

Also on the program is clarinetist Devin Starr (Warrenville) playing Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in Eb Major, Op. 74. “I love the energy and excitement of this work,” said Starr.  Starr has played in the Wheaton Municipal Band for 10 years and appreciates the musical excellence, friendships, and the challenge of playing difficult repertoire with just one rehearsal.

Don’t miss this wonderful mid-summer concert.  Sit back and relax to the “Shades of Blue,” on Thursday, July 18 at 8:00 p.m. in Memorial Park in downtown Wheaton.  For more information go to www.wheatonmunicipalband.org.
