CUSD 200 true per student cost

The true costs per student in CUSD 200 is $1,300 more than reported if one includes the cost of pensions paid via the state.

According to the Morning Bell: Revealing What States Are Hiding state are hiding the true per student cost  of education by reporting much of the pension costs in state budgets rather that school budgets.

I decided to check our district's numbers.  The latest easily available were for 2011.

  • The operating cost per student in CUSD 200 for the 2011 year was $11,529.
  • In 2011, the state contribution to TRS was $2.7 billion.
  • According to the school report card, there were 2,066,692 students in Illinois.
  • So, the cost of TRS pensions was $1,300 per student.

Thus, the actual per CUSD 200 student cost to the taxpayer in 2011 was $12,837.
