Park District to Pay Bonus for Jan. 1 Completion of Hubble Gyms

Construction in Hubble gyms will begin Sept. 17.

The Wheaton Park District board approved a $2,236,700 bid Wednesday night for construction work at the old Hubble school site, plus a $30,000 bonus to expedite the project for a January 1, 2013 completion, parks director Mike Benard said Thursday.

The park district has partnered with Bradford Equities, LLC, the developer buying the District 200 property and building a at the corner of Naperville and Roosevelt roads.

The park district will buy a portion of the Hubble school building from Bradford for $3 million to maintain its gym and outdoor recreation space. Benard said construction on the park district's portion of the property will begin Monday, Sept. 17.

The park district's plan to expedite work in the gyms moves the project up about six months, as Benard initially said the park district would wait until the spring of 2013, after the busy indoor sports season, to begin construction.

Bradford will also donate a parcel of the property's open space for athletic fields to the park district, and the two will swap Bradford's open space at the corner of Main Street and Roosevelt Road for the park district's Central Park property.

The $30,000 bonus would go to Palatine-based contractor if it delivers "substantial completion" of the project, which excludes the building's elevator and locker rooms, by Jan. 1.

Bradford will and begin asbestos removal in the old school Monday, Sept. 10, Bradford CFO Chad Jones said Wednesday.

Bradford and the park district sent a letter to neighbors living within two blocks of the property this week to let them know about the asbestos removal. Benard said neighbors were alerted after requesting notification at a .

Jones said he expects Mariano's will open in October 2013.
