Macy's Joins Ranks of Retailers Opening on Thanksgiving

What do you think — should stores begin Black Friday promotions on Thursday? Will you go shopping on Thanksgiving? Let us know in the comments section.

Macy's announced this past week it will join other retailers in jump-starting the Black Friday shopping rush a day early and will open on Thanksgiving Day.

"In response to interest from customers who prefer to start their shopping early, most Macy’s stores will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening, consistent with many other retailers," according to a prepared statement from Macy's.

"In a move to minimize the impact on associates, Macy’s began planning early to allow associates the time to review available shifts throughout the holiday season, including on Thanksgiving weekend, and to volunteer for the shifts they prefer," according to the statement.

The move to open on Thanksgiving night started two years agowhen Toys 'R Us opened at 9 p.m., according to U.S.A. Today. Last year, Target, Sears, Kmart and Walmart opened at either 8 or 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving, according to the article.

The move by Macy's shows how competitive this holiday season could be for retailers as many try to make up for dismal second-quarter sales, according to Reuters.
