Baby Born On Side of I-88

Glen Ellyn couple has "special delivery" as daughter is born on shoulder of I-88 while en route to hospital.

Charlotte River Shishkoff just couldn’t wait to enter the world.

Her parents, Liz and Ray Shishkoff, were on their way to Adventist LaGrange Hospital, when the Glen Ellyn couple pulled over to the side of I-88, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Although her contractions had been intensifying at home, Liz’s doctor told them they had at least another hour before they had to leave for the hospital.

Sensing it was time, the couple left home still hoping to make it to the hospital on time.

But they didn’t quite make it. Liz, a rehabilitative nurse, told her husband, “I think we may have to pull over,” she told the paper.

Ray pulled over to the shoulder of I-88 near York Road in Oak Brook and immediately called 911.

“I can see the head so she’s pretty far along,” Ray told the dispatcher.

A couple of more contractions later, Charlotte popped out on the passenger side of the couple’s Ford Focus, deftly fielded by her father. He handed the sweatshirt-swaddled baby to her relieved mother.

An ambulance rolled up moments later and brought the 27-year-old mother and baby to Elmhurst Hospital.

As he drove to the hospital to meet them, Ray, a 26-year-old computer software engineer, called his mother and told her the baby was born on the shoulder of I-88.

Charlotte, clocking in at 7 pounds and 20 ounces, was resting comfortably at the hospital with her parents, the Tribune said.
