JOIN GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY FOR NEW BRIDGE AT FULLERSBURG WOODS FOREST PRESERVE

Groundbreaking Ceremony at Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve

Join the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County for a groundbreaking to mark construction of a new bridge on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve in Oak Brook.
“This new bridge will improve connectivity along the 3.6 miles of trails at Fullersburg Woods, and its carefully chosen design will preserve the historic charm that many patrons cherish about their visits,” said Forest Preserve District President D. “Dewey” Pierotti Jr.
The new single-span structure will replace a bridge originally built in the 1930s. That bridge was damaged during a significant rainstorm and subsequent flood in August 2010, when fast-moving, high waters dislodged one of the bridge’s limestone piers, which cracked the beams crossing Salt Creek.
The new bridge, which is expected to open in early 2013, will conform to modern construction standards while retaining the visual character of the old structure with details like limestone facing on the abutments and wood details on the superstructure.
The ceremony will take place at the site of the new bridge on the west side of Salt Creek, which participants can reach via a connector trail south of the visitor center. The main parking lot for Fullersburg Woods Forest Preserve is located at 3609 Spring Road.
