JOIN “CORN HARVEST” AT KLINE CREEK FARM

Corn Harvest at Kline Creek Farm

On a farm, autumn is the time of harvest, a culmination of the year’s hard fieldwork and a period of preparation for the cold months ahead. Visit Kline Creek Farm, an 1890s living-history farm in West Chicago, to lend a hand during “Corn Harvest” Oct. 6 – 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Help with the real farm work of harvesting and storing corn that will feed the farm’s cows and sheep this winter. Use techniques authentic to the era to try shocking, or stacking bundles of corn to let them dry; shucking, or removing the ears of corn from the stalks; and storing the corn in the corn crib.
Throughout each day, visitors will also be able to make corn-husk figures, tour the historic house and explore the farmstead. Visitors are welcome to make a day of their visit and are invited to bring a meal to enjoy at the picnic area.
Activities are ongoing and take place outdoors. Wear sturdy shoes for walking in the fields, and bring some work gloves if you have them for handling the cornstalks and leaves. Registration is not required to attend this free program.
