Wheaton College McManis Lecture by Dr. Jon McGinnis
Dr.
Jon McGinnis will deliver a philosophy lecture titled "To Be or Not to Be:
The Avicennan Distinction between Essence and Existence and Its Repercussions
in the Thought of Thomas Aquinas.”
Dr. McGinnis is a Professor of Classical and Medieval Philosophy at University
of Missouri-St. Louis. He is also on the executive council of the Society for
Medieval and Patristic Philosophy and is a fellow in the Center for
International Studies.
In this Wednesday evening lecture, McGinnis will outline the influence medieval
Muslim philosopher Avicenna (980-1037) has had on the history of Christian
philosophy, philosopher Thomas Aquinas, and today's religious students in Iran.
This lecture is the first in the 2013-2014 McManis Lecture Series at Wheaton
College. It is free and open to the public, and will be held in room 339 of
