Genealogy Classes

All classes will be held in the large meeting room in the lower level of the library. Sponsored in part by the DuPage County Genealogical Society, the fee for each class is $10, payable with cash or check at the door.
Registration is not required, but requested.

Saturday, October 12, 2013 – 1 to 3 PM GET READY TO CLIMB YOUR FAMILY TREE This introduction to genealogy will get you prepared to climb your family tree. Learn what to look for (types of records), where to search (online and local resources), and how to record what you find (forms and software).

Saturday, October 26, 2013 – 1 to 3 PM FILE ORGANIZATION Information gathered from a multitude of sources--paper from library research trips, letters, emails, family stories, documents, photos, Internet downloads, images from digital cameras, and images scanned to computer--is most useful and easily found again when it’s organized in an orderly and logical way. This class will demonstrate various ways to organize a collection, reduce piles of paper, and put information in a format that can be used as a foundation for a family history book or CD/DVD.

Saturday, November 9, 2013 – 1 to 3 PM WRITER’S WORKSHOP This is a hands-on workshop where participants will begin to build a compelling family history story around genealogical evidence, incorporating context, and bringing history alive from photos and other artifacts. Time will be provided for participants to learn, write, share, receive feedback, and further develop their family stories.

Saturday, November 23, 2013 – 1 to 3 PM TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SEARCHES USING ANCESTRY.COM Learn how to search Ancestry’s 6 billion records more effectively. This class offers online instruction using Ancestry’s Learning Center and hands-on experience. Guided instruction by the presenter is used with a handout.
