Open House Presenting Ideas for Downtown Wheaton

During the summer and fall of 2012, the Design Workshop consultant team solicited initial input from the community regarding the future vision for Downtown Wheaton and some general ideas for its improvement over the next 20 years. The project team analyzed a number of factors – including traffic, infrastructure and the local market – to assist the City Council in reaching a consensus “vision” for the Downtown’s future.

As the next step, the consultant team will conduct a public open house at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Wheaton City Hall to discuss strategies that the community may consider in making the vision for Downtown Wheaton a reality over the next 20 years. The presentation will outline a variety of ideas, ranging from the creation of enhanced public gathering places and civic spaces, to improved streetscape ideas, to concepts for additional development and redevelopment of select areas within Downtown. The public can provide feedback concerning the various ideas shared through the use of keypad polling questions and by talking one-on-one with consultant team members.

In addition, on Feb. 28 and March 1, members of the consultant team will be meeting with Downtown stakeholder groups as well as business and property owners from the Downtown area to gain their feedback concerning the range of ideas and concepts for the Downtown’s improvement.

The public open house on Feb. 28 will represent a key step in creating the overall plan for Downtown Wheaton for the next 20 years. The City encourages the community to attend this open house to share their opinions.
