2014 Midwest Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature

Wheaton College hosts the 2014 Midwest Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature March 20 and 21. This year's conference title is "Ancient Texts and Global Worlds: Translation in Theory, History, and Practice."

Panel sessions and keynote lectures will examine how the study of literature frequently involves translation, whether linguistic, generic, or cognitive. Panelists will explore translation as an ancient and modern issue within a range of genres, including novels, poems, biblical commentaries, and films.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Clare Cavanagh, Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Northwestern University and Dr. Robert Alter, Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature at The University of California. Dr. Cavanagh will deliver a lecture titled "Translation and the Language of Paradise: The Case of Czeslaw Milosz" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20. Dr. Alter will deliver a lecture titled "The Challenge of Translating the Bible," at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21.Both keynote lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in room 339 of Blanchard Hall, located at 501 College Avenue in Wheaton.
