Residents Remember Old Hubble, Wheaton Community High School

New program features former students at Community High School, also the old Hubble school, which will be demolished soon for the development of a Mariano's Fresh Market.

The following message is from the City of Wheaton:

Wheaton Community High School – which became Wheaton Central High School and then (the former) Hubble Middle School – will soon be demolished. Take a look as three Wheaton Community High School graduates and its last principal pay tribute to the school by recalling their school days. Former principal Chuck Baker, Paul Schatz, Harold Gaede and Howard Duncan tell their stories during the latest edition of “Wheaton Remembers,” which is now available on the City’s website and City of Wheaton Channel 10.

The historic school building at Roosevelt and Naperville roads opened in 1925. For Baker, Schatz, Gaede and Duncan, the structure housed many rich memories. Duncan, Wheaton Community High School class of 1939, recalled his days milking his family’s cow before walking from his family’s farm on the north end of Wheaton to school. Schatz (class of 1948) and Gaede (class of 1946) shared stories of how the downtown was the central meeting place with soda fountains, a movie theater, grocery stores, auto dealerships and more.

Watch “Wheaton Remembers: Wheaton Community High School in the ‘30s and ‘40s” to see and hear about these recollections and many more.

“Wheaton Remembers” is a recurring television series in which longtime Wheaton residents share their stories of growing up in Wheaton to educate residents and preserve Wheaton’s history for future generations.
