The DuPage County Health Department announced Monday that residents have disposed of 5 tons of medications through the RxBOX program.

The DuPage County Health Department announced Monday that DuPage County residents have disposed of five tons—more than 10,000 pounds—of expired or unwanted medications in the Health Department’s RxBOX program.

Launched in 2009, the RxBOX program has collected 10,070 pounds of medications that otherwise might have been flushed down the drain or placed on the curb with garbage.

”As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, I want to applaud our residents for taking advantage of this wonderful program that is protecting our environment and keeping our families safe,” said DuPage County Board of Health President Linda Kurzawa.

The Health Department has partnered with 12 municipal and county law enforcement agencies in placing RxBOX collection boxes in police stations throughout the county.

The materials are collected periodically from the RxBOX locations and safely incinerated by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency using state-of-the-art technology.
