District 200 Cancels Classes; County Offices Closed Thursday

Due to flooding and the severe weather school was cancelled and county government offices are closed.

A flash flood warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday night. The National Weather Service has issued the flash flood warning for urban areas and small streams in DuPage County, along with areas around Chicagoland.

From the City of Wheaton

All City of Wheaton emergency and Public Works crews are currently out in the community addressing traffic and flooding. This is an ongoing situation that the City is addressing and will continue to address as weather develops. 

Many roads are closed due to flooding. Please do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. 

The City has already received more than 300 calls and is addressing them. Residents with calls related to flooding issues should call 630-260-2110. Emergency calls should be directed to 9-1-1. 

Sandbags are available at the City’s Public Works facility, 821 W. Liberty Drive, at the west Liberty entrance. 

To help document the effects of intense rainfall in Wheaton, the City is seeking photos from residents. If you have photos taken during the event that depict flooding in your area or other areas in Wheaton, please send them by email to stormwater@wheaton.il.us, post them on Twitter using #wheatonflood, or mail them to City of Wheaton, Attn: Stormwater Engineer, 303 W. Wesley St., Wheaton, IL 60187. In your correspondence, include the approximate time and location the photo was taken. 

Information will be posted as the City assesses the storm event.

A statement was issued by County Board Chairman Dan Cronin:

“DuPage County has suffered from severe flooding throughout the entire county. We are working with our municipal partners to help alleviate the situation for our residents. More than 39,000 sandbags have been provided to the municipalities and we have opened the County’s shelter located at Benedictine University in Lisle, where more than 25 people are currently seeking services. The County is also operating all 15 of our flood control facilities including the Elmhurst Quarry, Fawell Dam in Naperville, Spring Creek Reservoir in Bloomingdale and the Wood Dale-Itasca Reservoir. We will continue to monitor the situation and assist residents during this unprecedented flooding event,” said DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin.

DuPage County has received 4 to 5 inches of rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday morning. Another 1 to 2 inches of precipitation are forecasted throughout the day Thursday.

Schools in District 200 are closed today in Wheaton due to the severe weather conditions and flooding.

In addition, the DuPage County government offices are closed due to flooding. The closings include: This includes all County complex buildings, including the Administrative building (421), Health Department (111) and Court buildings (503/505), according to the county’s website.
