Suburban Life Newspapers Sold By GateHouse To Shaw Media

The group of publications included papers in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, Woodridge, Darien, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Bolingbrook, La Grange and Western Springs.

Shaw Media, owner of the Northwest Herald and Kane County Chronicle, has purchased Suburban Life, a group of 22 weekly newspapers in Chicago's western suburbs, according to an announcement from Shaw on Monday.

Owned by GateHouse Media, Suburban Life's publications span dozens of the western suburbs. Mastheads include the Glen Ellyn News, Wheaton Leader, Elmhurst Press, Downers Grove Reporter, Bolingbrook Reporter, and Suburban Life papers in La Grange, Western Springs and Darien, among others.

The purchase also includes Republican papers in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles, where Shaw already operates the Kane County Chronicle. Shaw did not previously have any publications in DuPage, Will and Cook counties.

Kane County Chronicle Publisher J. Tom Shaw will assume the same role for all of the Suburban Life publications.

Many of the Suburban Life publications were purchased in the late 1990s or early 2000s from family-owned publishers. Monday's announcement celebrates the publications' return "to their family-owned roots."

Shaw is based in Dixon, while Suburban Life is based in Downers Grove.
