Tollway Ramp Closure Scheduled Thursday Night, Early Friday

Work to repair traffic sensors on the ramp carrying traffic from the southbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to westbound I-290 in Elmhurst has been rescheduled from Wednesday to overnight Thursday, Nov. 21.

The work will require the ramp to close for a few hours and traffic to be detoured.

The ramp closure is now scheduled from midnight on Thursday, Nov. 21, until 4 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. The detour will route traffic south on I-294 and then east on I-290, where drivers will be directed to exit at Mannheim Road (Illinois Route 12) north, then re-enter via the westbound I-290 entrance ramp.

In the case of inclement weather, which is forecast for overnight Thursday, additional work may be required overnight Friday into Saturday, Nov. 23, which would require two 15-minute closures of the ramp beginning at midnight.

A full closure is necessary to complete repairs because the bridge is not wide enough to accommodate a work zone while maintaining traffic. The Illinois Tollway is scheduling the closure during the overnight hours to minimize the impact to commuter traffic.

Work Zone Safety

Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7 and drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution. A 45 mph speed limit will be in place in work zones.

Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.
