- Artist R.J. Ogren has been working since late July to create Pearls of the Universe, a 70-foot mural celebrating Wheaton’s diversity, at 1026 E. College Ave., according to a release from the city.
Wheaton’s Community Relations Commission and Fine & Cultural Arts Commission say the project is nearing completion and are asking residents to take part by signing their names with paint on the mural. According to the release, the signings are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.
The mural is inspired by Wheaton resident Mehret Asgedom’s poem, The Pearl. Asgedom came to Wheaton as an Ethiopian refugee when she was a child. Wheaton businesses and individuals have joined the two city commissions in support of this project.
The dedication of the mural and a reception are planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at the mural, 1026 E. College Ave.
