Glen Ellyn Food Pantry in Desperate Need of Donations

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is in need of cash and food donations to meet client demand.

The need for food in the Glen Ellyn area has grown to the point where the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is now experiences shortages in funds and food items.

The nonprofit is reaching out to the community to seek additional donations. While the food pantry receives a lot of community support, the need for food assistance has surpassed cash donations.

The Glen Ellyn Food Pantry is short on donations of food items and cash donations it uses to purchase perishable goods including: milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, frozen meat and vegetables.

“With the economy we are definitely seeing a bigger rise in new clients, that has something to do with it,” said Terri Venzon, the pantry coordinator. “I’m sure over the years it’s been a roller coaster [with need growing and decreasing], at this time we are so overbooked with clientele we are not getting in the amount of donations to equal.”

The food pantry serves those in need in Glen Ellyn, Lombard, Carol Stream, Glendale Heights, Lisle and Wheaton. The pantry is registering roughly four new clients a day, Venzon said. Clients can only access the pantry six times a year. In many cases the food pantry is providing emergency food packages to those who have already used the pantry six times.

In addition, the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry gave out a larger number of Thanksgiving meals, yet it didn’t get as many donations as last year and the donations received didn’t meet the need, Venzon said.
