City Performing Sewer Smoke Testing in Portion of Wheaton

Engineering firm RJN Group Inc. will be performing smoke testing of the sanitary sewers starting in early August, with anticipated completion by the end of August.

The City of Wheaton is conducting a program to identify locations where storm water is entering the City sanitary sewer system as part of its Sanitary Sewer Improvement Plan. Engineering firm RJN Group Inc. will be performing smoke testing of the sanitary sewers starting in early August, with anticipated completion by the end of August. A map of the testing area is on the City’s website.

Note: The Wheaton Sanitary District is performing sewer smoke testing July 25-Aug. 2 related to its north interceptor project; this is a different project. See more information about the Wheaton Sanitary District project.

Smoke testing is a simple means of locating openings in the sewer system that allow surface rainwater runoff to enter the sanitary sewers. Air combined with nontoxic smoke is forced into the sewer lines to identify the location of connections and leaks. Smoke will appear where there are defects in the main sewer line or laterals (connection between the main line and a building) or where there are other connections to the sewer system such as roof drains, patio drains and footing drains.

Residents whose homes are in the vicinity of the smoke testing will receive a notice by mail from the City. The contractor will provide door hanger cards and post signs when crews are testing in the area.

Smoke should not enter buildings unless there is defective plumbing or dried-up drain traps. If your residence is in the testing area, you should pour water into infrequently used sinks and floor drains to help prevent smoke from entering your home. If smoke is entering your home, please contact a member of the RJN field crew if they are still on your street. If the RJN field crew is no longer in the area you may contact RJN Group’s office at 630-682-4700.
